Football Team Colors

Are you ready for some football?!!!

I just realized that I am, in fact, not ready. I have my awesome double-knit scarf for the Longhorns games:

Wouldn't this be great in your team's colors?

But I do not have a scarf—or any other knit item—for the Houston Texans. At least that should be relatively easy to find the right colors, because, man, it was tough finding a true burnt orange for the UT scarf. The one above uses Vanna’s Choice by Lionbrand, the Rust color description on their site even says “deep burnt orange”. Ordinarily I never would have bought Vanna’s Choice (really, Vanna White? All acrylic yarns?) but I have to admit, the end result is pretty damn nice, I do love wearing this scarf.

A knitter friend who is a graduate of University of Miami also had a tough time finding the right orange and green for her team colors (apparently orange is a really tough one). I need to set up a page that matches yarn colors with team colors. Here it is so far:

Brett Farve jersey

Brett Farve’s jersey is poised to take over as the highest priced item in the NFL’s Crucial Catch auction. Drew Brees’ jersey is still listed for more at $4,000, but there’s only six days left in that auction. Currently at $3,500, the Farve jersey only took one day to achieve the same numbers that it took the Brees jersey a week to reach, and there’s still 20 days left.

I predict the Farve jersey will sell for a stupid amount of money to some large corporation and wind up mounted and framed in their corporate headquarters. I’d rather it end up in some guy’s basement game room where he and his buddies will stand by it drinking beer and going, “Yup, Farve’s jersey. Yup.” But that’s just sentimental me.

Drew Brees jersey

The current highest bid for Drew Brees’ signed and game-worn jersey is $3,540! The next highest item right this minute is $1,500 behind that, Maurice Jones-Drew’s helmet (also signed and game-worn). I wonder why the bids are so high for the jersey, is it because of the pink captain’s patch? Or perhaps because the Saints are doing so well this year? It’s easy to like the Saints, even if you’re really the fan of another team, they’ve never been a serious threat and so don’t have any serious rivalries. Or maybe it’s because everyone likes Drew Brees? I can’t help but like Drew Brees myself. Even though he played for Westlake in high school—he was young and impetuous, and probably just didn’t know any better. Anyway, his sweaty jersey is raising some big bucks to fight cancer, so that’s a good thing.

Buy Mario’s used gloves!

The top bid for Mario Williams’ game-worn gloves is currently $200 as I write this. And there’s five days left, so I expect the price will go up significantly. Which is good, more money raised, but aw, I can’t possibly afford to bid. Just as well, I really don’t know what I’d do with them, past putting them in a case in the game room and point them out to people when they come over – Look, Mario Williams sweated in these! Nah, it’s just as well.

Humph, the Making Strides logo on that page is all fuzzy, *I* would have done a better job with that (ahem).

Pink Is a Manly Color

At least it is when you put it on football players. I’m loving the pink accents the NFL is using for the A Crucial Catch campaign to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pink coordinates surprisingly well with the team colors, I’m really going to miss it after October ends. I wonder if there’s any chance some of the players or coaches will keep it up? Eh, I guess not, since everything is supposed to be auctioned after the campaign ends. But it’d be cool if they did. All the proceeds for items in the auction will go to breast cancer research funding – I would so love to buy something, but I bet it’ll all go for way more than I can afford. Which, actually, is a good thing, better that research funding makes more money than I have some more NFL crap around my house.

While I’m talking football – hey, the Texans defense is trying to make a liar out of me by playing well against the Raiders yesterday (that safety was awesome!). Which is actually fine with me, go right ahead, I’ll be happy to eat my words.

One last note – on October 11, it’s the Dallas Cowboys vs. the Dallas Texans. That’s right, the Chiefs will be wearing their throwback uniforms from the 60s when the team was part of the AFL and were located in Dallas, as the Dallas Texans. Lamar Hunt lobbied for a game between the two Dallas teams, but it never happened; now the Game That Never Was will play out in Arrowhead Stadium this upcoming Sunday. If the Chiefs don’t win another game all year (and the way they’re going, that’s a distinct possibility) I hope they win this one. It’d be a fitting tribute to Lamar Hunt.

Predator Hair

Are there really more pro football players with predator hair now, or am I just noticing it more?

I can never quite decide if I really like it. It can be entertaining – admit it, you smiled when you looked at the pic of Atari Bigby here – but it can’t possibly be practical. I’ve had long hair before, I know all too well what a massive pain-in-the-ass burden it is. And for a football player, it seems potentially dangerous. Maybe it’s supposed to add a level of intimidation. Hey, maybe it even does, I know that’d make me wonder about someone’s sanity if they were facing off against me with all that shag hanging out of their helmet.

Maybe Schaub isn’t so bad

I’m starting to gain some faith in Matt Schaub. I hope I’m not completely jinxing the Texans by posting this at halftime, but Schaub is looking pretty good now that he’s recovered from that ankle injury. Clearly, Houston’s real problem now is their defense, they’re making some major errors; Jacksonville really should not have so many points on the board in the first half here. It’s taken me a long time to warm up to Schaub, I hope my faith is not being misplaced here (apparently I can’t help but remain a little skeptical).

Followup

New rule – never post during halftime ever again. But I stand by what I said before, Schaub wasn’t at fault for the loss. It was less that Jacksonville won than the Houston defense just blew it completely. That, and it really would have helped if Chris Brown hadn’t fumbled right on the goal line; but I don’t think he’s entirely to blame for the loss, either, it shouldn’t have come down to needing that touchdown just to tie.
